United States regulators are considering an immediate ban on flavoured e-cigarettes, as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warned of an “epidemic” of vaping among youths.
FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb in a statement said there are clear signs that youth use of electronic cigarettes has reached an epidemic proportion. “We must adjust certain aspects of our comprehensive strategy to stem this clear and present danger,” he added.
He went on to say that the agency was seriously considering a policy change that would lead to the immediate removal of these flavoured products from the market.
E-cigarettes are battery-powered devices that heat a nicotine liquid into a vapour that can be inhaled.
According to critics, fruit-flavoured liquids appeal to kids and risk addicting them to nicotine.
